Prompt Design

Turn a task into a prompt with clear context, inputs, constraints, and output criteria.

When to use it

Use this to turn an underspecified request into an instruction with clear context, inputs, constraints, and output.

Useful inputs

  • Goal
  • Context and input
  • Constraints, quality bar, and output format

Instruction

State goal, context, inputs, constraints, and output format. Add fillable placeholders for unknowns.

Example input

Goal: Summarize weekly team status. Input: [Status notes]. Output sections: Blockers, completed work, next steps. Do not invent missing details.

Example result

Summarize [status notes] using only the information provided. Use these headings: Blockers, Completed, Next steps. Include an owner for each item; use [assign] when no owner is given. Flag missing or unclear information separately.

Common pitfall

When describing the desired result, do not imply the model has context that was never provided.
