80/20 Prioritization

Identify a small set of actions likely to deliver outsized impact, with assumptions.

When to use it

Use this to identify a small set of actions with high potential impact under time constraints.

Useful inputs

  • Task or opportunity list
  • Impact goal
  • Effort and dependency estimates

Instruction

Compare impact and effort to identify a few priorities. Label estimates and assumptions clearly.

Example input

Tasks: Mobile layout, new report, help copy, performance improvement. Goal: First-user activation. Effort: Estimate 1–5 and note uncertainty.

Example result

Priority candidates: Mobile layout and help copy. Reason: They directly address first-use barriers and can be tested in a small scope.
Uncertainty: The impact estimate is not validated with user data.
Measure: Track first-task completion before and after the change.

Common pitfall

Do not present the Pareto ratio as measured data; explain assumptions behind the ranking.
